In the beginning of John 6, thousands of people were excitedly following Jesus, but by the end of the chapter, as the result of his difficult and challenging teaching, nearly the whole crowd had deserted him. The disciples stayed not because they were less offended by Jesus words, but because they knew that while his words were difficult, they were true - and thus what they needed -and what we need- to hear.

In John 6:35 Jesus said, "I am the bread of life"- he is the source of life. But the life Jesus is talking about isn't physical life, but he is teaching that he is the source of living - of quality in life. He is teaching that just as we need food to give us the nutrients to thrive physically, in the same way a relationship with Jesus is the source of meaning and gladness that makes like not only survivable, but meaningful and enjoyable.

How To Study The Bible - Week 4: Guidelines for Daily Devotional Reading pt.2

How To Study The Bible - Week 4: Guidelines for Daily Devotional Reading pt.2

March 18, 2019

As believers, it is vital that our commitment to God’s Word goes beyond what others teach us, but that we each seek to “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15). A key part of this is our personal devotional reading. While we may miss days from time to time, ideally each of us are committed to seeking to spend time every day reading and studying God’s Word. While these ideas will not instantly unlock every truth contained in the Bible, hopefully they will help make it a little easier to understand the Bible’s teaching in personal study.

In the end of John 5 Jesus gives more than just a claim to be God, he also gives witnesses to validate his claim. However, he also points out that most people who reject him don’t do so because of intellectual doubts, but because they don’t want a God they have to answer to, so they choose to believe what they want to be true.
